Privacy Policy

Origin Path is run by Eugene Kim. "We" and "us" in this policy means Eugene Kim.

The short version

  • Origin Path is a private place to keep track of what you do in high school: your activities, small moments, and the themes that connect them.
  • What you write is yours. Other students, parents, teachers, and schools can't see it. We don't look at it except when needed to keep the app working or if the law requires it.
  • We never sell your information or share it for anyone else's use. We only use a few services that help run Origin Path (listed below). We don't show ads or use tracking cookies or ad trackers.
  • We collect only what the app needs, mainly: your email to sign you in, your first name and graduation year, and what you choose to write. When you sign in, basic details like your IP address and browser are kept while you're signed in, and in a security log for up to 7 days.
  • "Read my story" (when it's turned on) sends your moments, activity names, and theme names to an AI company, Anthropic, to write a short reflection. It never sends your name or email. Anthropic may keep it for up to 30 days (longer only if their safety systems flag it). You choose when to use it.
  • You can download everything you wrote for free at any time. When you delete something, it's gone within 2 days, and from backups within about 10 days. You can delete your whole account whenever you want.

What we collect, and why

  • Your email address: to sign you in with a one-time code or link, and to confirm it's you before deleting your account. We don't send marketing emails.
  • Your first name and graduation year: to greet you, and to place your moments in 9th to 12th grade on your story map.
  • What you write: activities (name, role, type, dates, hours, a short description), moments (text, date, links to an activity or theme, a "turning point" mark) and themes (names and colors). This is your story; we store it so you can see it and come back to it.
  • When you passed the age check: to show that you told us you're 13 or older. We record the time you answered, never your age or birthday.
  • Sign-in records: when you signed in, plus your device's IP address and browser type, for security. Your session record is kept while you're signed in and deleted when you sign out (which signs you out on every device) or delete your account. A security log of sign-in events (which can include your email, IP address and browser) is kept in our sign-in system's logs for up to 7 days, then deleted.
  • "Read my story" use: the time of each reading, to limit readings to 3 a day. Deleted after 2 days.
  • Where a theme came from: whether you named it or added it from a "Read my story" suggestion, to understand whether suggestions are useful. Only you can see your themes.
  • Weekly totals: once a week we count, across everyone, how many students saved a moment, how many were new, how many moments were saved, and how many came back the next week. These are numbers only, with no names, emails, account ids or anything you wrote, so we can tell whether Origin Path is actually helping students keep their stories.

What we never collect

  • Your age or birthday (only the fact that you said you're 13 or older)
  • Your school, address, phone number or exact location
  • Photos, contacts, or anything from other apps
  • Payment information
  • Advertising or tracking cookies, or data from ad networks

What's stored on your device

Your browser keeps a few small things so the app works: your sign-in session, whether you chose light or dark mode, whether you see your moments by date or by activity, which activity groups you collapsed, whether you dismissed today's "A year ago" card, which story milestones you've reached and seen (and whether you hid them), and (only until you close the tab) whether you're viewing the example story and that you passed the age check. None of these are used for tracking.

"Read my story" and Anthropic

"Read my story" uses AI to suggest themes in your moments. It's currently turned off; this section explains how it works when it's on. Each reading is labeled "Written by AI from your moments" and can get things wrong. It never scores, rates or ranks you, and never predicts admissions results.

  • What's sent, and only when you press "Read my story": the text of your most recent 150 moments (not removed ones), the month and grade of each (like "Oct 2024, 10th grade", never the exact date), whether it's marked as a turning point, and the names of your activities and themes.
  • What's never sent: your name, email, graduation year, school, exact dates, or account id.
  • If something you wrote sounds like you might be struggling: we check your moments before sending anything, and if our check finds signs of that, nothing is sent and no reading is made. If the AI notices it instead (after your moments were sent), it doesn't write a reading either. Either way you'll see a message about where to find support, and we don't store it or tell anyone.
  • Who receives it: Anthropic, which provides the AI. Anthropic processes it on our behalf and doesn't use it to train its models. It deletes it within 30 days, except that content its automated safety systems flag may be kept for up to 2 years (and safety scores for up to 7 years).
  • What we keep: we don't store the reading itself. It disappears when you leave the page.

Who else handles your information

We never sell your information or share it for anyone else's use. These companies handle it only to run Origin Path for us:

  • Supabase stores your account and everything you write, and runs our servers.
  • Resend sends the emails with your sign-in codes.
  • Our website host serves the app's pages.
  • Anthropic provides the AI for "Read my story", when it's turned on (see above).

Pages load only from Origin Path's own servers and Supabase. Our fonts are hosted with the app, so your browser doesn't contact Google or any other company when you use Origin Path.

We would only share information if the law requires it, or to protect someone's safety.

Your choices and controls

  • See and change: everything you wrote is in the app, and you can edit it any time.
  • Download: Profile → Your data → "Download my story" gives you a readable text file or a data file of your profile name and class year, activities, moments and themes. It's free, always. The file saves to the device you're using, so on a shared computer, move it somewhere private or delete it afterwards.
  • Remove items: when you delete a moment or activity, or remove a theme, it's hidden right away. You can undo for 30 seconds, and it's permanently erased within 2 days. A daily backup made in those 2 days can still hold it for up to 7 more days, so it's gone from backups within about 10 days.
  • Delete your account: Profile → Your data → "Delete my account". To make sure it's really you (for example on a shared school computer), we email a 6-digit code to your account's address. Once you enter it, your account and everything in it are deleted immediately: your profile, activities, moments, themes and sign-in sessions.

What remains after a deletion

  • A deletion record: we keep your account's random id (not your email or anything you wrote) for 8 days, so we can re-apply your deletion if we ever have to restore a backup.
  • Backups: our database is backed up daily, and backups are kept for 7 days, so a deleted account can remain in a backup for up to 7 days (and a single deleted item for up to about 10 days, counting the 2 days before it's erased). Backups are only used to recover from a disaster.
  • Sign-in history: a log of sign-in events (which can include your email address, IP address and browser) stays in our sign-in system's logs for up to 7 days after each event, then is deleted automatically. It isn't stored in our database.
  • Anthropic: anything already sent to "Read my story" follows Anthropic's retention above.

Keeping your information safe

Who can see what you write: only you, in the app. Other students, parents, teachers and schools can't. The people who run Origin Path could technically reach the database, but we don't look at what you write except when needed to keep the app working (for example, to fix a problem you report) or if the law requires it.

Each student can read and change only their own information, which is enforced by the database itself. Signed-out visitors can't see anything. Our AI and admin keys never reach your browser. No system is perfect, and if something goes wrong that affects your information, we'll tell you.

Age

Origin Path is for students 13 and older. When you sign up, we ask your age, and sign-up doesn't continue if you're younger than 13. If you believe a child under 13 is using Origin Path, email hello@originapath.com and we'll delete the account and everything in it. Parents and guardians can also email us about their child's account.

Changes to this policy

If we make an important change, we'll tell you in the app and by email at least 30 days before it takes effect. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
